THE WHITE LOTUS was the hottest show of the summer, and writer/director Mike White is enjoying what may be the biggest success of his career. He's, of course, an indie darling and a festival favorite as well, so we decided to look at 3 of his films: THE GOOD GIRL, SCHOOL OF ROCK, and BRAD'S STATUS. Joining for a second time us is the legendary JOE REID of THIS HAD OSCAR BUZZ! We talk the art of voice over, the Film Independent Spirits Awards, and why the culture wasn't ready for Amy Jellicoe! Plus, THE TELLURIDE LINEUP!

We love Baby Annette! We’ve been talking about Leos Carax’s musical Cannes prizewinner essentially since our inception, and so now that it’s available for everyone to see, we gave it a real red carpet treatment. Joining us is GRIFFIN NEWMAN of Blank Check with Griffin and David, and we of course discuss many things including the pronunciation of Cotillard, the extraordinary energizing opening number, and the finer details of CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG’s release and festival strategy.

Swords and armor are the name of the game for our main discussion this week. We take a look at 80s Cannes player EXCALIBUR, John Boorman’s telling of, well, the whole Arthur story, as well as new release THE GREEN KNIGHT, David Lowery’s trippy and challenging take on the story of Sir Gawain. Joining us is the host of HEAVY MEDDLE, the great ETHAN BRUNDEEN! We talk muck, Lowery’s festival history, “one for them, one for me” filmmaking, and Andy may even work in some talk of HAMILTON. All this plus more news of the NYFF lineup!

Bruno Dumont and NYFF News with Will Hines
Friday Aug 13, 2021
Friday Aug 13, 2021
Slowly but surely we are getting to the bottom of what exactly happened at Cannes 2006, this week we take a look at what is perhaps the bleakest film of all time, Bruno Dumont’s FLANDERS. We pair it with a very tonally different recent offering of his, SLACK BAY. Joining us to ponder these extremely extreme movies is comedian and improv teacher WILL HINES! How does Dumont’s portrayal of war land with an audience? What exactly is his festival history? And how do The Klumps enter into all this? All these questions answered, plus the NYFF Main Slate and even more TIFF movies!

Our coverage of CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG begins here, but when will it end? Next we share some updates about the NYFF and Venice lineups and and pair it with some speculation about what announcements might be imminent. After a brief sojourn about Jordan Peele’s recently announced NOPE we lay Cannes 2021 to rest, discussing the last few premieres, Spike Lee at the awards ceremony, and the winners past and present, before a mini review about Palme Winner Julie Ducournau’s first feature, RAW. Zola and No Sudden Move with Greta Taylor (Narrator/El Soderbergho)
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Friday Jul 09, 2021
We've got a week to cool our heels before reacting to full Cannes madness so we have decided to invite the foremost Steven Soderbergh expert, Greta Taylor (@elsoderbergho) to talk about a pair of new releases. Zola (directed by Janicza Bravo) and No Sudden Move (directed by Steven Soderbergh). We talk about Zola being an excellent work of adaptation, the most recent period of Soderbegh's facinating career and Succession cast members finding their sweet spot in film.
