Friday Dec 01, 2023
If we had unlimited resources, we could truly put on a hell of a film festival. It's time for us to prove it once again, all four hosts sit down and put together a weekend lineup for a 2023 festival. Thrill as we debate settings, sponsors, and just how many live podcast recordings we can bank at this year's edition.

As the holidays begin we turn to our Thanksgiving Time Tradition-Shortsgiving! Donning sunglasses to protect our eyes from the brightness of our generosity, we discuss a new crop of shorts, one picked by each co-host. This year's crop: THE GAG (2023, Dir. Larry Owens), (tourism studies) (2019, Dir. Joshua Gen Solondz), LAST DAYS IN A LONELY PLACE (2007, Dir. Philip S. Solomon), and THE CRITIC (1963, Dir. Ernest Pintoff). As always, we are grateful to YOU, the LISTENER!

With the major fall fests in the rearview and awards season coming down the pike, we're getting a lot of interesting movies in theaters right now, so we thought it was time to look at 3 of the more high profile ones. Martin Scorsese's Cannes premiere KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, Justine Triet's Palme D'Or winner ANATOMY OF A FALL, and Sofia Coppola's Venice Best Actress winner PRISCILLA are all discussed.

Maestro’s Music with Fran Hoepfner
Friday Oct 27, 2023
Friday Oct 27, 2023
Leonard Bernstein is one of the most important musical figures of the 20th century. He is also the Maestro, as explored in the upcoming film MAESTRO, directed by noted weird guy Bradley Cooper. We wanted some more context before MAESTRO makes its way across America, so we turned to America's preeminent MAESTRO authority, FRAN HOEPFNER! Together we do some light previewing of the film, and dig into a range of Bernstein's composing works: ON THE TOWN, SYMPHONY NO. 2: AGE OF ANXIETY, ON THE WATERFRONT, and CANDIDE.

NYFF Reactions and Annie Baker’s THE ANTIPODES
Friday Oct 13, 2023
Friday Oct 13, 2023
NYFF is close to wrapping up, so we've gotten a good idea of how New York has reacted to all sorts of things. We discuss that, the rest of the fall festival landscape, some AFI odds and ends, and then turn to look at an earlier work from JANET PLANET director ANNIE BAKER, her 2017 play THE ANTIPODES. We discuss the world Baker creates in the play, where it departs from her earlier work, and what we find so compelling about her as an artist.
